In 1993, 4 women volunteers from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ recognized an opportunity to help young exhibitors. They formed a group to reach out to students, and with generous donations from friends the organization grew, and these ladies were able to help students with financial hardships incurred while participating. We got a new name “Amigas Para Ninos” and we became a 501(c)(3) organization soon after.
Who We Are Now
We have 46 active members guided by the founding mission with an even larger footprint. We have 15 sustaining members who pay dues, continue to support us in many ways but do not have voting privileges. Although we are not a rodeo committee, we do enjoy a very rich “dotted line” relationship with them as our members are rodeo ladies and our students are generally from the auction exhibitor pool or rodeo source organizations such as 4H or FFA.
How We are Organized
Each active member is a voting member of our Board of Directors. We follow the magical 3 year cycle for Board leadership. Every 3 years a new slate of officers is recommended by the Nominating Committee and presented to the Board for election. The current leadership team, with a term expiring May, 2020, is listed below.
Our Annual Fundraiser
Each year we present our highly anticipated fundraiser – a fall favorite! There are 2 ladies that manage the gala and they are the primary contacts for specific auction related questions. The chair and co-chair serve for one year, then the major role transfers to the co-chair and another co-chair is named, etc. All members procure items for our silent auction, big board, wine barrow and live auction and provide names of potential new donors. Our intent is not just to fill tables, but rather to fill tables with individuals who will hopefully buy at our auction and support our mission. It is a lovely event and we as Amigas wear many hats prior to and during the evening. The last two years we have enjoyed a sellout situation prior to the event so the interest continues to grow and therefore we have moved to a larger venue. Amigas pride soars high all evening long!
